NA 'OPIO O KA 'AINA (HAWAI'I CLUB)

Mission Statement:
Na 'Opio o Ka 'Aina, which translates to "The Youth of the Land," began in 1985 by students from Hawai'i at UC Irvine hoping to ease the transition of Hawai’i students to the mainland life style, as well as college life. We serve as a social support group so students from Hawai'i would not feel homesick and would have activities to do outside of the classroom. However, Na 'Opio o Ka 'Aina prides itself on being one of the few Hawai'i clubs that integrates students from Hawai'i as well as students from other states. We also share the Aloha spirit and spread the Hawaiian and Polynesian culture to the surrounding UCI community through our cultural workshops and performances. Thus, we serve as a cultural/social club.

PILIPINO PRE-HEALTH UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ORGANIZATION

Mission Statement:
PUSO's Mission Statement outlines the purposes that the organization was established to serve. The Mission Statement is the backbone of our organization. It is our task to uphold and breathe life into this mission through our events, programs, and actions.

This organization was established to fulfill the following objectives:
1. To provide service, guidance, and support to pre-health students.
2. To sponsor programs for minority youth to encourage their entrance into health professions.
3. To increase the number of culturally sensitive health care professionals.
4. To serve the campus and the community of Irvine as well as the Pilipino community at large.
5. To spread "PUSO Love".

Meeting Times:
Tuesday 5:00-6:00pm in the Cross-Cultural Center, Dr. Joe White Conf. Room

Annual Events/ Projects:
Pre-Health Conference(PHC):
PHC was founded to help pre-health students find a career path in the health field. This year will be PUSO's 10th annual Pre-Health Conference - Past PHC themes included Health Fields in Perspective, Healthology 101, and the Crossroads of Health.

Medical Mission Gala:
Proceeds from the Medical Mission Gala go to a scholarship, which funds exposure trips to the Philippines (or another developing country). This year will be PUSO's 10th annual Medical Mission Gala. The Medical Mission Gala was founded in 1999-2000 by Lori Vaveros, the first Medical Mission Coordinator. The first gala was founded by proceeds from "The Fifth Sense" Hip Hop Showcase. Four years ago, the idea of the Medical Mission Gala spread to PCH @ UCLA (Pilipinos for Community Health) as their Medical Mission Outreach benefit.

High School Outreach:
High School Outreach was started to combat the falling number of Pilipino-Americans continuing onto higher education. PUSO strives to combat high school drop-out rates and inspire the youth of today to pursue higher education. PUSO brings high school students to the UCI campus and shows students what college life is all about as well as encourage and provide them with information about how to get into college. This year will be PUSO's 14th annual HSO event. HSO was founded in 1996-1997 in collaboration with Kababayan with Annalyn Valdez as the first HSO coordinator. A long-term program has been established where UCI students from PUSO visit a high school throughout second half of the year to tutor them in various academic subjects. Past HSO themes were Finding Your Rhythm: Move to the Beat, The Next UniverCity, and Beneath the Surface.
