UC Irvine Summer Multicultural Leadership Institute 2011

The Cross-Cultural Center, on behalf of Manuel N. Gómez, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, is hosting the 6th Annual Summer Multicultural Leadership Institute (SMLI) and you are eligible and invited to apply! This opportunity is your chance as an incoming first-year student to begin meeting your fellow student leaders and learn about the various aspects of campus life and leadership development. The Summer Multicultural Leadership Institute, which will occur Friday, August 12th through Sunday, August 14th on UCI’s campus, is a selective program that allows participants the chance to engage in unique workshops and challenging dialogues focused on such topics as diversity, social justice, free speech, and conflict resolution. Since we know that you are a premier student leader among your peers, we urge you to seriously consider applying. Fifty students are selected to attend SMLI, and it is our hope that each student participant becomes a future ambassador for UCI’s campus.

All students selected to participate in this unique program will receive a scholarship that covers the cost of all workshops, residence hall accommodations, and meals for the entire weekend. However, the program does not cover cost of travel to the campus. Upon acceptance into the program, we will only ask for a non-refundable $25 fee that will act as both a deposit and to cover miscellaneous expenses.

Please know that this is not a substitute for the Student/Parent Orientation Program (SPOP) – the required orientation for new first-year students. You are required to attend a SPOP session during the summer regardless of your participation in SMLI.

Students that participate in the SMLI will be able to:

-Demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of the complexities of diversity, including the dimensions of race, religion, gender, ability, citizenship, and class
-Acquire a personal understanding of social justice; specifically how social justice pertains to college students and higher education
-Begin to develop conflict management skills on a personal and organizational level
-Understand various styles of leadership and develop various leadership skills
-Develop skills in building community with others - staff, students, student groups and off-campus community members
-Recognize some of the multifaceted aspects of a higher education institution
-Understand the challenges associated with freedom of speech on a college campus
-Become empowered to take advantage of leadership opportunities on campus

Program dates are Friday - Sunday, August 12-14, 2011 (Only 50 spaces available)

The deadline to submit your application is Saturday, July 9, 2011
